I had one of the most delicious mango cakes at (東海堂) Arome bakery Hong Kong!
I found this place while attempting to go see the Bruce Lee statue on Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui. I went around in circles and got a bit lost but I somehow made my way to the Hong Kong Museum of History and luckily it turned out that the statue was close by. As I cross Granville street, right in front of me was the Arome bakery.
Arome is a Japanese bakery with modern and premium style desserts. They definitely look more on the very neat and smooth. They claim to only use Japanese ingredients but are only located in Hong Kong. If you go to their website, which also has an “English” option, you will find what their latest desserts are, coupons and the option to place orders online.

I couldn’t decide what to pick. There were many different cakes, a few fruit tarts and pastries. In the end, I just had to try a chestnut and a mango cake.
Chestnut & Hojicha Roll Cake – $20HKD ($2.56USD)
I actually thought this was chocolate cake because of how brown it was. Turns out that it was Hojicha (ほうじ茶), a Japanese green tea that is a brownish-red instead of a green or yellowish color due to how the leaves are cooked. Instead of being steamed, the leaves are pan cooked or oven roasted (For more info: SeriousEats & AJGT). This cake was pretty dry even with the cream. I found myself wanting milk with it. I couldn’t really taste the green tea. It tasted like mild mocha; perhaps because of the nuttiness of the chestnut and the earthy flavor of the hojicha. Bits of chestnuts were mixed into the filling.
To be honest I also forgot that the cake was chestnut flavor and I was confused at this extra piece that originally came on top of the cake. I truly thought it was an olive. As I cut into it, I then thought it was some red bean paste ball. I sat there wondering what kind of cake I ordered; thankfully I figured it out. The chestnut has like a nutty bean flavor to it. With all the different bean pastes Japan makes, this tasted a lot like any other paste. Delicious but not a pastry that left me in awe.
Rich Mango Sliced Cake – $21HKD ($2.69USD)
This cake was extremely delicious! It was very soft and not too sweet. The mango is real and not some paste or gelatin; It’s literally thinly sliced mango. The yellow cake had a milky flavor and the yellow cream was mango flavored. The mango was very soft and melted in my mouth. If you’ve ever had freshly cut, good quality mango, it’s juicy and sweet. This mango was just like that. Honestly, it’s been a long time since I’ve had a dessert this satisfying. It’s so delicious that you enjoy every bite but not addictive that you want to have an endless amount of it. One slice is good enough. If I could take or mail a whole cake of this back to the U.S, I wouldn’t have hesitated.
Would I shop here again? Yes.
I would love to have the mango cake one more time before leaving Hong Kong. I will most likely stop by and try one of their other fruit cakes. As I looked through their website, I saw some other sliced cakes that I didn’t see at this location. Hopefully I get to stop at one of their other stores to try something different.
One thing I do regret is not being able to buy a whole cake here since the cakes look so pretty. Not only because of the price but also because even though the cakes are pretty small, I don’t think I would want to eat an entire one by myself. I’m thoroughly satisfied after that mango cake!
