I Visit the Original Coffee Prince Café from the Kdrama “Coffee Prince”!

Last Updated on 2022/03/23

When I arrived in Seoul, I continuosly reminded myself to stop by the Coffee Prince Café from the classic Kdrama “Coffee Prince”. It was one of my all time favorite Kdramas; I had to stop by the original set! (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)

If you don’t know about the Kdrama “Coffee Prince“, it’s an old Korean drama from 2007. The story is about an irresponsible grandson, Choi Han Kyul (Gong Yoo) from a rich family and a tomboyish girl, Go Eun Chan (Yoon Eun Hye) who’s mistaken to be a boy. Han Kyul hires Eun Chan to pretend to be in a gay relationship and avoid blind dates. Because of this, he is forced to take over an old coffee shop to prove himself to his grandma. Han Kyul rehires Eun Chan to serve at the coffee shop where he only hires males, while Eun Chan hides her gender to earn money. Both start falling in love, causing Han Kyul to question his sexuality.

It wasn’t easy finding this place. I ended up taking a bunch of turns to get here.

At first thought it as closed down because it looked dark and overtaken by nature. I snapped a few photos of the property outside and walked away. Before I reached the end of the block the owner had come outside. I turned back because of the noise and saw the owner tell some locals who were taking photos to leave if they weren’t going to buy anything.

I must’ve been lucky that I wasn’t caught taking photos and embarrassed in that manner in public. The couple left; from what I could see in their faces, they weren’t too happy. I can understand the owner’s frustration though. Maybe too many people stopped by the shop to take photos but never ordered anything.

Since the owner was outside I decided to see if I could get inside. He welcomed me without me having to ask, which was odd since I just saw him snap at the other couple. Inside was dark but everything from the Kdrama looked exactly the same. He had me order something before letting me take photos around the restaurant. As I decided, a couple came in, so maybe the place was dark and empty because people tend to come later in the day? It was past noon so I expected the shop to have at least 5 customers.

As soon as I walk in, I saw the stairs to the 2nd floor (photo below), the bathroom and the bar area (photo above). If you’ve seen the Kdrama, a lot of the stuff is exactly the same, even the position of the tables and chairs! I really wish I could’ve gone to the upper terrace but the it was closed off to guests when I went.

I was very happy to finally get to the famous flower mural from the Kdrama. I remember watching the drama and thinking it was very beautiful! ♡( ◡‿◡ )

What really surprised me was finding the original waffle cart and a standee of Gong Yoo and Eun Hye! It really felt like a I was walking in a filming set. Taking pictures inside the shop reminded me of my trip to locations in the Kdrama “Goblin” (도깨비) in Quebec City! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ It was a magical time that I love to think about even now; I’m sure stopping at the Coffee Prince Café will be a similar happy memory!

As you can see in the photo, the café has an extensive beverage variety. I had a very hard time deciding if I just wanted any drink or a set or cake or everything!

I would say these are normal café prices but at first glance, I thought it was expensive because I didn’t know what I was going to get or if it was going to be good since there were no photos or size samples to compare with.. I could go to a commercial shop like Café Bene or Paris Baguette and see exactly what I was getting. If I was paying $7+ for a beverage in one of those shops, I would imagine it would be a pretty big, delicious looking product.

I couldn’t find a menu for the cakes available unfortunately.

I hadn’t had lunch yet, so I didn’t want to have too much to eat. I ordered a tiramisu cake and peach smoothie. The prices were a little high in my opinion but the size of the items were worth the price, so I couldn’t complain.

The peach smoothie was very delicious! It cost me $8,000WON. There was so much, I couldn’t finish it. The tiramisu cake cost me $5,000WON. It was a bit disappointing. It didn’t taste much like the tiramisu cakes I’ve had before. Also, it was very lacking in cake; the majority was just cheese so maybe that’s why I couldn’t find the coffee and chocolate flavor.

Would I come here again? Probably not!

I don’t see myself returning to this place. It doesn’t seem to be a shop that keeps up with current trends and with the prices they have, I could probably find a different café with lower or similar prices. I’ve gone to old cafes before for their calming, natural aesthetic but there has to be a reason for me to return, whether it’s the prices, the menu, the taste, or the atmosphere. Maybe if I got to taste a waffle? The location is pretty prime and the shop is really cute; I feel like it should be a more upbeat trendy place but for some reason didn’t seem as popular as I thought it would be.

2020.9.23: Have you heard! The main cast of “Coffee Prince” got together for and MBC documentary, “My Dear Youth – Coffee Prince”. You can read about it on Soompi!
