I normally don’t do this kind of review but I got the McDonald’s BTS Meal for lunch today, and it was a little more disappointing than I was originally expecting.
I don’t generally enjoy McDonald’s food so I don’t eat there regularly. The last time I had anything from McDonald’s was in 2019 and it was because I was running late to work. I hadn’t eaten and bought a McChicken. The last time I enjoyed food at McDonald’s was March of 2019 when I was in Japan because they had different menu items. I loved eating the Ebi Filet-O Shrimp Burger.
I wasn’t super curious about the Korean inspired sauces, so what really made me decide to get the BTS meal was the packaging. It wasn’t much but for US BTS fans, it would be a little slice of Kpop related promotional mementos that South Korean fans always get. Over a year of no in-person Kpop concerts as well, I’m sure many of us really miss the fandom culture experience; cup sleeve events can only provide a portion of that.
I was disappointed when I got to order and I had to tell the clerk what sauces I wanted. Weren’t the Sweet Chili & Cajun sauce included? Luckily I planned ahead and looked up the names before ordering. Some of my friends weren’t so lucky. Some didn’t get the sauces at all & others only got 1 of the 2 sauces. When I got my BTS meal, I could only shake my head. No BTS purple packaging!
I was not surprised.
I proceeded to let my friends know all the details about the BTS meal. Since I wasn’t surprised, I didn’t really have much of a reaction to it; just “yup, something I’d expect in the US”. I was later told that the US never planned on having the packaging in the first place. Again, I wasn’t surprised.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I never saw McDonald’s state up front that certain countries wouldn’t have the packaging; it seemed one of those things they left out on a “need to know basis” or “if you asked, you knew”. I simply assumed like many fans, since there wasn’t anything particularly special about the meal, no photocards to be specific, that the packaging wouldn’t be something not included.
I did try the sauces!
Sweet Chili (스위트 칠리)
I’d say very vinegary but sweet & slightly spicy. The vinegar makes it similar to barbecue sauce; it gives it a tangy touch.
The sauce was good. It went well with the nuggets! But for me, the sauce had a little too much vinegar. I was really looking for that sweetness & spiciness, not necessarily a sour taste additionally.
This sauce reminds me of honey mustard but with a little spicy kick & lemony.
I have to say I preferred this sauce over the other, probably because it really did taste like honey mustard and I like honey mustard with nuggets. The Cajun sauce does contain milk, something to watch out for if you’re lactose intolerant.
The meal cost me $7.39USD plus taxes. I had a friend at another location, who saw it was $8.39USD plus taxes.
Locations may have varying prices! Check out their website or app for more information. Make sure to check out the app for BTS exclusive behind the scenes.
Would I buy this again? NO!
I’m a little jealous that Canada is so close and yet so far since they have the BTS packaging available. I’m sure many US BTS ARMY would’ve made the trip to enjoy the meal there if we could travel easily back & forth. Since I wasn’t expecting much from this promotion, so the disappointment won’t dwell with me long (it might be a deciding factor for future related promotions however). Life goes on.
I wanted to feel the 보라해 but McDonald’s didn’t supply!WREN
My yumdroplets rating
Note: Keep in mind that I don’t eat at McDonald’s because I don’t like McDonald’s. I do enjoy their ice cream & might try new items, but my opinion on their food will always be slightly biased.
