Thelma’s ice cream sandwiches branching out is really exciting to me since the only place I was able to have them was when I stayed in Des Moines, Iowa.
I stumbled on Thelma’s by accident when I was exploring the older part of Des Moines. I almost walked away but decided to try something new. For my first time buying, I got a snickerdoodle ice cream sandwich. I believe it cost $2.99USD at the time. After leaving, I kept thinking about returning for a weekend to check out my favorite parts of town but never did.
Fast forward a few years later and I find Thelma’s ice cream sandwiches in store. I used to get one every time because I never knew when they would be in stock again until recently last year I’ve been finding the ice cream sandwiches more available in different stores. Just the other day I found their new mini packs! I had to get the variety!
The 3-pack variety was $6.99USD plus taxes; about $2.33USD each.
It was a little expensive considering that 1 of their regular sized ice cream sandwich is $2.99USD plus taxes. BUT I only get Thelma’s maybe twice a year if I see them in store; it’s a nice treat for me.
They also had a 4-pack of regular sized Thelma’s ice cream sandwiches and those were $10.29USD plus taxes. So buying them regular sized is cheaper.
I got these at Woodman’s but you can search for a retailer near you with their store locator on their website!
I’d say the mini’s are a little over 2 inches, 2.36in = 6cm. The regular ones are about 3.5inches = 8.9cm.
Thelma’s Mini 3-Pack Variety
The 3-Pack variety includes the following:
- Signature Snickerdoodle
- Double Chocolate Chip
- Strawberry Sugar
The snickerdoodle ice cream includes:
- 2 snickerdoodle (cinnamon) cookies
- vanilla ice cream
A snickerdoodle is like a regular vanilla cookie with cinnamon. This is my favorite ice cream sandwich. It’s tasty and satisfying. The cookie has buttery flavor while the cinnamon adds a earthy and warm sweetness. I’d probably add a little more cinnamon but the sandwich is perfect how it is.
Double Chocolate Chip
This ice cream sandwich included:
- 2 chocolate chocolate chip cookies
- chocolate ice cream
I was impressed. I always skip anything with chocolate ice cream, not because I don’t like it, I’m just more interested in other flavors; I know what chocolate tastes like. This tasted like a brownie with ice cream and chocolate chips. Both the cookie and ice cream were fantastic!
As you can see this ice cream sandwich is:
- 2 sugar cookies
- strawberry ice cream
I really liked how this tasted. It was very light. The sugar cookies weren’t too sweet and I enjoyed the strawberry flavor of the ice cream. It reminded me a bit of a strawberry shortcake.
As you can see in the image the nutritional fats for each sandwich is listed.
I noticed that the sandwiches have carrageenan. It’s a pretty common ingredient in dairy products. I found out that carrageenan can cause bloating.
This is something to keep an eye on in case you’re prone to bloating or other gastrointestinal problems.
Would I buy this again? Maybe.
I’ll probably buy Thelma’s ice cream sandwiches again but I don’t think I’d buy the mini packs. I bought it this time around because I really didn’t want the bigger sandwiches but from what I can tell, it’s more cost effective to buy the 4-pack regular sized sandwiches instead. I also tend to opt out for making my own ice cream sandwiches, sundaes, etc by buying pints of ice cream and eating it with cookies and cakes because it’s cheaper. I can also make whatever flavor I want.
Still you should definitely give Thelma’s ice cream sandwiches a try.
